Considerations
- web>clicker slows things down a bit while the software goes to the server to pull down students’ votes; this delay is as much as 10 seconds.
- There is a risk of overloading the campus wireless network when students go to vote with their device.
- If the wireless network on campus goes down, and there is no cell phone service in the building, students won’t be able to vote.
- Students can submit their vote from anywhere: their dorm room, across the country, work. Their classmate simply has to communicate the question to them.
- Instructors have no guarantee that their students are using their phones or laptops for learning about the course material; these devices introduce multiple distractions into the classroom.
Advantages
- Convenience: students don’t have to purchase another device to vote in your class.
- Students are less likely to forget their laptop or mobile device at home.
- There could be possible cost savings if a student is only using i>clicker for one semester; however, for longer use, the cost savings would diminish and/or disappear.
Instructors, we strongly recommend that you consult your campus IT department to confirm that your classroom meets the technical requirements.
