Involve your students—even from miles away.
“…faculty can now take the pulse of the students in real time and assess immediately whether the students at all sites have grasped the concepts…This new tool has the potential to enhance learning, no matter the limits of geographic location.” -Kathy Gaul, Island Medical Program, University of Victoria
i>clicker’s Satellite Polling System, or SPS, is an interactive distance learning system that enables instructors to poll students from multiple classrooms using satellite bases – from just down the hall to across the country.
SPS addresses two growing trends in higher education:
- Traditional classroom overflow. As large classes grow in enrollment, there is simply not enough space in the classroom. Many large lecture classes have a “main” classroom where the instructor lectures and an “overflow” classroom where additional students watch the lecture down the hall. SPS enables faculty to engage all of their students—including those in the “overflow” classroom.
- Satellite campuses and distance education settings. Many distance education and training programs include synchronous lectures and lessons in multiple locations. SPS enables instructors and trainers to connect all of their students—from across the state or even country—and engage them in the material.
To use SPS, the instructor simply enables a setting in his or her i>clicker software at the “host” location that allows the software to communicate with i>clicker hardware in “satellite” locations. The i>clicker base in the satellite locations collects the students’ votes and sends them to the host location via the web. The votes from the satellite and host locations are then compiled to form one convenient histogram, and the data is collectively recorded in i>grader.
SPS allows students to connect with each other using traditional i>clicker remotes and their instructor regardless of their geographic location and enables the instructor at the host site to gather and display results immediately from all locations. SPS will be fully available for adoption in January 2010.
SPS is part of the i>clicker Distance Learning suite.
